Dehumidifiers are incredible home appliances for drying laundry indoors while removing condensation and mould.
However, for dehumidifiers to work to the best of their abilities, they need to be used correctly.
Honeywell dehumidifier experts warn that several common mistakes should be avoided when using this appliance, which can waste energy and increase bills.
They explained: “Dehumidifiers are valuable appliances that help maintain a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment. They work wonders in reducing excess moisture, preventing mould and mildew growth, and alleviating allergies.
“However, like any other appliance, using a dehumidifier correctly is crucial to ensure it does its job effectively.”
Choosing the wrong size
According to the experts, “one of the most common mistakes” people make when using a dehumidifier is choosing the wrong size for their space.
They stressed the importance of selecting a unit that’s the right size for the room you’re looking to dehumidify or the amount of clothes you’re trying to dry.
The pros explained: “A dehumidifier’s capacity is measured in pints of water removed per day. If you pick a unit that’s too small for your room or wash load, it won’t effectively remove condensation and dry clothes fast enough.”
On the other hand, they warned that “an oversized unit might turn on and off frequently, wasting energy.”
Putting a dehumidifier in the wrong place
Poor placement can also “significantly impact its performance”. Placing it in a corner or near walls and obstructions can restrict airflow, “reducing its efficiency”.
Instead, they suggested positioning it in the middle of the room for better circulation. Most dehumidifiers come with wheels and handles, making them easy to move around for optimal placement.
Not maintaining a dehumidifier
Like any other appliance, dehumidifiers need regular maintenance. Failing to clean or replace the filter, empty the water bucket, or maintain the coils can lead to “decreased performance and potential breakdowns”.
The experts recommended following the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines. Typically, dehumidifiers have washable filters and clear indicators for water levels, making upkeep straightforward.
Using the wrong settings
Experts have warned that dialling in the wrong setting on your dehumidifier can be a mistake. Set it too low, and you’ll get air that’s “excessively dry and uncomfortable.”
On the other hand, cranking it up too high “won’t effectively combat humidity-related issues.”
