How to stop mould growing on tile grout in 15 minutes without bleach

Maintaining spotless bathroom tiles can seem like a never-ending task, but there’s a remarkably straightforward method to prevent mould from appearing on walls for extended periods. Tile joints are constructed from grout, a substance designed to secure tiles in position, but it’s composed of highly porous materials such as sand and cement. As time passes, dirt and grime discolour the grout, establishing perfect conditions for mould to flourish between the tiles, making it challenging to eliminate since conventional sponges or mops cannot penetrate these areas.

Nevertheless, Jared, a specialist from Certified Clean Care, has revealed an extremely effective technique for preventing mould in your tile grout using just a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Jared explained, “One way to clean and whiten the grout is by using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Mix the two ingredients to create a thick paste.”

Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant with anti-fungal qualities that can penetrate grout to eliminate mould spores while avoiding damage to the tiles, reports the Express.

It’s frequently incorporated into toothpaste due to its whitening properties, meaning it will simultaneously remove stains and brighten grout to enhance your bathroom’s appearance.

Numerous individuals rely on bleach for tile cleaning; however, it can emit considerable toxic vapours in a bathroom and may gradually deteriorate grout, potentially causing cracks.

Hydrogen peroxide represents a gentler alternative that won’t leave dangerous residue as it simply decomposes into water and oxygen. Bicarbonate of soda boosts the cleaning power of hydrogen peroxide due to its abrasive nature, which helps scrub away grime without scratching the surface.

How to use hydrogen peroxide to clean bathroom tiles

Firstly, add a few teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda to a bowl and then slowly pour in enough hydrogen peroxide to create a thick, smooth paste.

Don’t fret if the solution bubbles. It’s simply the ingredients working together, and the movement can help the solution penetrate the grout deeply.

Put on a pair of cleaning gloves and apply this paste to any stained grout on your tiles. Allow the solution to sit on the tiles for about five to 10 minutes.

This gives the cleaning solution time to break down the mould or any stains sitting in the tiles.

Once the time is up, use a bristled brush or an old toothbrush to gently scrub at the grout, and the stains should easily lift any mould or dirt.

After scrubbing, rinse the tiles with warm water to remove the paste and then wipe with a dry cloth to remove any excess moisture.

Your bathroom tiles should now look spotless and bright without any stains at all, making your bathroom appear much more hygienic in just 15 minutes.
