Sometimes, it seems easier to toss them out or try harsh chemicals in a last attempt to bring them back to life, but that’s not always the best way to deal with this issue. But according to stain removal expert Nigel Bearman from Daily Poppins, there’s a much simpler and more affordable solution – and it only costs around 30p at most UK retailers, like Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

“Lemon juice is a natural cleaner with antibacterial properties, which means it effectively cuts through stains and kills any bacteria,” said the expert. Not only does it effectively clean your clothes, it will also leave them feeling soft, smelling amazing.”

To try this natural brightening trick at home, simply squeeze the juice of a whole lemon into a bucket of hot water, then submerge your white garments.

Let them soak for one to two hours, checking periodically on their progress, and then wash as normal.

The citric acid in lemon juice works much like a natural bleach, breaking down grime and stains without the use of synthetic additives.

Not only does it save money, but it’s also an eco-conscious alternative to conventional products, gentle on fabrics and better for the environment.

For particularly stubborn stains, Nigel recommended combining the juice with a sprinkle of salt and gently rubbing the area before washing.

Drying whites outside in direct sunlight further boosts the whitening power, as UV rays act as a natural bleaching agent.

Beyond laundry, lemon juice is known to be a versatile household staple used for cleaning and disinfecting.

The expert said: “Try mixing it with water to create an all-purpose cleaner. Its acidity helps to break down grease and grime without the harsh chemicals.

“Mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and use it on any surface in your home to give it a deep clean.”

So, next time you’re at the supermarket, consider picking up a few lemons to have on hand for any potential cleaning needs.
