Carpets across UK homes after Christmas may be suffering from the festive spillages – think red wine and gravy mishaps and these can stubbornly cling to fibres and stain.

Offering advice to cleaning enthusiasts on the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one savvy cleaner shared her parents’ carpet transformation tale.

Ditching conventional carpet cleaning wisdom, Kelly Wright sang praises for an unexpected hero – a degreaser known as Elbow Grease.

Kelly said: “So I saw a lady on here remove nasty stains from her carpet using Elbow Grease so I had to give this a go.”

She continued with excitement: “I did this on my parents’ stairs and I’m extremely pleased with the results.”

Detailing her method, she explained: “The method I used was using an empty bottle of Dr Beckmann carpet stain remover (it’s easy because you have your scrubber attached).”

She went on: “I then filled the bottle a quarter way with Elbow Grease and filled up the rest with hot water. I found this worked so much better than the carpet cleaner.”

Not stopping there, Kelly then described each step in her approach: “I then squeegeed the carpet before hoovering and then scrubbing the stairs with the bottle and scrubber.

“And voila – the results were amazing. The stains disappeared instantly – only about five minutes.”

She wrapped up her instructions with a final tip: “I did go over it with hot water and a sponge afterwards just to rinse away the Elbow Grease.”

Kelly wasn’t alone in her success, as many group members echoed their love of Elbow Grease for tackling those tough carpet stains.

Penny Sharp commented: “I clean my beige/brown hall rug with the same. It is brilliant and works like magic! I don’t soak it, I just lightly spray and rub it with a cloth. Stains disappear, amazing.”

This all-around cleaning product has gone viral on social media in the last few years and is beloved by Mrs Hinch and her many followers.

The cleaning spray is also ace for tackling stubborn marks on surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as on fabrics and carpets.
