With the arrival of autumn, now is the best time for household to tackle any moss issues affecting their driveways or patios. As moss is actively growing at this time, it can successfully be killed off. However, the UK experiences a lot of wet weather, so it’s important to look for periods where dry weather is expected for at least 24 hours as this will allow the treatment to effectively cut through the moss and do its work.

While a pressure washer can be used to rid moss naturally, if not used properly,  it can cause damage to your paving. Instead, paving experts at Tidey and Webb LTD have recommended two simple natural methods – one of which gets to work in 15 minutes and removes the moss entirely in one week.

The first solution is to use vinegar. The experts said: “Yes, it can be this simple. A common item you are likely to have in the home can be your cure for moss invasions on your driveway.”

For this method, mix some white vinegar with water in a spray bottle. The pros claimed that the acidity of the vinegar will “cut through the moss killing it off”.

Make sure entire area of moss is soaked well in the homemade cleaning agent and leave it to set for 15 minutes.

Once the time is up, head back in with a scrubbing brush and simply scrub the moss away. Households will need to do this every day for around a week to get the “best results”. Once done, hose down the area and your paving will “look great again”.

The second solution is to use baking soda as a sprinkling of this kitchen ingredient will dry out the moss making it simple to brush away. Baking soda creates an alkaline environment where moss cannot survive.

It is recommended to leave the powder for a “few days” to allow the baking soda to “fully work itself into the moss”, then once you have it’s a “simple cleanup”.

To prevent moss returning, one of these cleaning methods needs to be caried out at least twice a year.

Alternatively, households should improve the drainage. Ensuring water can run off the surface reduces how much moisture is present and limits the chance of moss growing.
