Patios and driveways need to be kept clean and free from moss to avoid them turning into treacherous no-go zones. Mosses are small, non-flowering plants which produce spores, have stems and leaves, but do not have true roots. They can grow in a variety of situations, such as on lawns as well as patios.
The pros at Bright and Beautiful have advised gardeners to forget the harsh chemicals or kitchen concoctions, as soda crystals are a “go-to for banishing moss with ease”. They said: “Soda crystals are a great option to blast through any moss and algae, leaving your patio beautifully clean.”
The reason soda crystals are so effective is that moss and algae thrive in damp, acidic environments, but soda crystals create conditions that are offensive to these green pests.
Soda crystals boast a high alkaline level that moss can’t stand, plus they’re super absorbent, meaning they’ll suck the life out of moss by dehydrating it swiftly.
But the benefits don’t stop there; soda crystals also tackle dirt buildup, starving any remaining moss and algae, making it “impossible for future growth”.
For this method, simply scatter a liberal dose of soda crystals over your affected patio or driveway.
For optimal results, apply the soda crystals on a calm day, as wind can disperse them. If it’s windy, use a watering can to moisten the crystals and keep them in place.
Allow the soda crystals to sit undisturbed, giving them time to break down and dehydrate the moss spores. This process typically takes around two days.
You’ll know the moss is dead when it turns brown and becomes brittle, losing its spongy texture.
Once the moss is dead, use the broom end of a spade to scrape it off your patio, along with any algae.
Be sure to dispose of the dead moss in the bin, as even a small amount of spores can cause regrowth, especially in damp conditions. Your patio will now be clean and ready for the warmer weather ahead.
The expert concluded: “And there you have it, a brand new looking patio ready for garden parties and sunbathing in the sunny months.
“Please note, soda crystals can be harmful to household pets if ingested, so ensure you are monitoring your furry friends whilst the soda crystals do their work.”
