How to remove makeup stains from white clothes instantly

Makeup stains on white clothes are frustrating and sometimes seem impossible to remove. From foundation smudges to mascara marks, they can ruin your outfit in seconds, but before you give up on your favourite top, there’s a quick and easy solution. A cleaning expert at How Stuff Works revealed that just one common bathroom item can erase stubborn marks instantly.

They shared: “Most makeup stains are oil-based or water-based, and knowing which type you’re dealing with can guide your stain removal approach. Oil-based makeup stains, such as liquid foundation, lipstick, and mascara, can be trickier to remove than water-based ones; to tackle them, you’ll need the right tools and techniques.”

There are several ways to remove makeup stains, and many of them use items you already have at home. DIY solutions are a great place to start, and one item works like a charm: shaving foam.

It is important to note that this cleaning hack only works with shaving foam and not shaving gel or cream, according to Better Homes and Gardens. This DIY solution is cost-effective and often just as efficient as commercial stain removers.

Out of all the makeup products, foundation is the most likely to leave a mark on your clothes due to its colour and formula. It covers more surface area on your face and neck, increasing the likelihood of stains.

To remove foundation stains, “start by scraping off any excess makeup with a dull knife or the edge of a credit card. Then, apply a small amount of shaving foam or stain remover directly to the stain.

“Shaving foam can be effective because it can cut through the oil.” Gently apply the shaving foam with a soft-bristle brush or a clean cloth, working it into the fabric.

Let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse with cold water. Wash the garment in the washing machine as you normally would. If the stain is still visible, repeat the steps until the stain is completely gone.

Would it work on all fabrics?

The expert warns that not all fabrics should be handled the same. Different fabrics may require different approaches to stain removal, so it is always important to check the fabric care label.

“For delicate fabrics like silk or lace, it’s essential to exercise caution. Hand wash the stained area with a mild detergent in cool water, and avoid scrubbing vigorously.

“For sturdier fabrics like cotton or polyester, you can be more aggressive in your stain removal efforts. Remember to always check the care label and fabric type before proceeding,” said the home expert.

Other DIY solutions:

  • Dish soap
  • Liquid detergent
  • Rubbing alcohol
