How to remove limescale from taps fast without vinegar or chemicals

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, Lynn Hayes shared incredible before and after images of her tap—one of which showed chunks of limescale that had fallen into the sink.

Along with the photos, she wrote: “A 2p coin really does work to remove limescale! Can’t believe the results. The limescale literally drops off!

“I just wet the coin. Some of it was quite stubborn to remove, as it’s been there for quite a while, but it only took 25 seconds.”

With some group members worried about this method leaving scratches behind, Lynn assured, “I thought it might [leave scratches behind], so I just tested a small part first. I just kept wiping with a cloth as I went along. No need for scrubbing and no scratches left behind.”

When asked for further details on how to use the coin to remove the limescale, Lynn said: “Just rub the edge of the coin along the limescale.

“I also used the flat side underneath the tap, as if you were blocking it. Just have a try—it might make more sense once you start.”

Many group members shared their thoughts on this tip after trying it. Julie Aucote wrote: “I joined this group yesterday, and this was one of the first tips I read. I tried it this morning, and it really did work. I just chiselled/rubbed away with the wet coin.”

Joyce Jones said: “I did mine yesterday using 2p – amazing result!” Claire Piggott replied: “Found this tip out last week. I tried it on my taps and they came up great.”

Jayne O’Meara commented: “Just keep the 2p coin wet and keep rubbing it. Really does work. It can take a while, but so worth it.”

When rubbed against limescale, the coin can spark a chemical reaction between the copper and calcium, breaking down even the toughest buildups that standard cleaning products struggle to eliminate.

For those not seeing the desired results with this tip, cleaning enthusiast Anita Berry advised: “Sometimes you need a bit of Viakal with it to loosen up the limescale.”
