Washing machines can start developing odours due to trapped moisture and product buildup if not maintained properly. It may seem like an unnecessary chore, but over time, cleaning this household appliance periodically makes a world of difference.
Professional plumber James Clarkson, who has worked on residential and commercial plumbing systems across the UK for over 15 years, shared why foul smells can develop so easily. He said: “The smell usually comes from trapped detergent residue, fabric softener, and lint mixing with warm, damp conditions. This creates the perfect breeding ground for mould and bacteria.
“Once that builds up behind the drum or in the rubber seal, the machine can quickly start smelling.”
Luckily, the solution is as easy as it is inexpensive, costing just £1 and eliminating the sewer smell in a few simple steps.
How to get rid of washing machine smells
- Place half a cup of baking soda into the washing machine drum.
- Start an empty hot wash cycle at 60C or above.
- For added freshness, pour a bit of white vinegar into the detergent compartment to help break down limescale.
Bathroom and kitchen experts at Plumbworld pointed out that odours aren’t just from the drum – rubber seals and detergent drawers are often the source as well.
“As detergent residue and moisture accumulate in the folds of the door seal or the corners of the drawer, mould can develop rapidly,” explained a representative for the specialist retailer.
“Wiping these areas with a cloth soaked in hot soapy water or diluted vinegar can stop that musty scent from returning.”
