Battling toilet limescale can be a real headache, especially when it’s often overlooked during the cleaning routine. Despite using bleach, Pink Stuff, and other chemical cleaners in my home, the persistent limescale caused by our hard water area just won’t budge – we even have to replace our kettles biannually due to the scale!

In a bid to conquer this nuisance, I put three different methods to the test: Coca-Cola, white vinegar with baking soda, and Harpic Power Plus (and you can read about how citric acid fares against toilet limescale here). My aim was to uncover a hassle-free technique that demanded little elbow grease and could deliver results within a day – and here’s what I found out.

1. Coca-Cola

For those seeking a non-chemical alternative, Coca-Cola is frequently recommended as a swift fix for removing toilet limescale. It’s purported to do the job in a mere two hours, so I gave the popular soft drink a whirl for my initial experiment.

Home gurus at Villeroy & Boch claim, “Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid, which also removes limescale and urine scale. To dissolve deposits, simply pour the contents of a one-litre bottle into the toilet bowl and leave it to work for a few hours.”

The results

Before embarking on my trial, I made sure my toilet was spotless and disinfected, following up with a vigorous scrub. After flushing, I poured in a litre of regular cola and let it sit for three hours.

After waiting, I returned to vigorously scrub the toilet while the cola was still present. Yet, despite flushing, the outcome showed minimal change.

After using baking soda and vinegar

It’s been suggested that cola can tackle limescale, but given the year-long accumulation in my loo, it seems this tip is better for less severe cases. Considering the lack of improvement, I opted not to repeat the process and instead moved on to a different tactic.

2. White vinegar and baking soda

Next, I tested the acclaimed ‘golden solution’ for cleaning woes: baking soda and white vinegar. Chris Wootton, Managing Director of Poppies, a domestic cleaning company, shared his method for limescale removal.

He detailed: “Pour a half cup of bicarbonate of soda into and around the bowl and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Then, apply white vinegar over the baking soda. This produces a fizzing reaction that activates the acid and can break down the most stubborn build-ups of limescale.

“After about 10 minutes, scrub the toilet bowl thoroughly with a scouring pad – you may need to use some elbow grease! Once you have done this, flush a few times to rinse it all away. This should have done the trick.”

The results

I allowed this solution to sit for two hours instead of the recommended 10 minutes, hoping for a fair test. However, the outcome was rather disappointing.

As depicted in the accompanying photo, the limescale was barely affected, though there was a slight improvement.

Perhaps a longer duration would have been more effective, but even vigorous scrubbing failed to shift the limescale. Nevertheless, I remained hopeful and resolved not to enter a second day without improved results.

3. Harpic Power Plus with baking soda and white vinegar – winner

There’s often a reluctance to use potent cleaning products at home, but sometimes they can be a real lifesaver. At my wit’s end, I turned to Harpic Power Plus.

This robust toilet cleaner is reputed to eliminate limescale and stubborn stains, kill 99.9% of bacteria, remove dirt, and prevent build-up.

When using Harpic, lift the toilet seat and position the nozzle under the rim. Gently squeeze the bottle to cover the entire inner surface of the bowl.

For effective cleaning, let it sit for 10 minutes before brushing and flushing. For disinfection, leave it for 60 minutes, then brush and flush.

The results

I applied a liberal amount of the chemical around and inside my toilet, but mindful of how resistant my limescale can be, I also added a cup of baking soda and white vinegar for an extra kick. After just two hours, I finally saw significant improvement without the need for strenuous scrubbing.

I then reintroduced the same solution and let it sit for another two hours, and voila! The majority of my limescale was eliminated.

My toilet isn’t entirely pristine, but the before-and-after is striking, particularly as it necessitated minimal scrubbing and took less than six hours.

I subsequently added more Harpic without the white vinegar and baking soda and allowed it to settle for an additional two hours, but this had no effect – it appears that combining the two methods yields the best results!
