With the temperatures dropping and energy prices continuing to climb, many UK households are looking for ways to cut costs this winter. While upgrading heating systems and increasing energy efficiency are common solutions, there’s one simple and quick test that could result in huge savings on your heating bills. In fact, it could potentially slash them by up to £350.
Surprisingly, it’s not about upgrading your windows, but about checking something you might overlook entirely: your doors. Ilja Medvedevs, founder of doorsuppliesonline.co.uk, explained why this seemingly small step is crucial.
“Most homes are leaking heat without realising it – and the biggest culprit isn’t the windows, but the doors,” he stressed.
To perform the check, simply place the back of your hand around the edges of your external doors. Move slowly, especially along the bottom edge. If you feel cold air, then your door is leaking heat, and you’re likely wasting money heating the outdoors.
Ilja added: “This is probably the best 10 seconds you’ll spend this autumn. It costs nothing, and the savings are instant once the draughts are fixed.”
Even a tiny gap can have a massive effect, as Ilja explained: “Even a 1mm gap around a door is like having a hole the size of a brick in your wall.”
September and October are considered the ideal months to check, giving you enough time to make any needed changes before the coldest weather arrives.
Fixing the problem is both quick and affordable, as there’s no need for costly door replacements or extensive home renovations.
Draught excluders and door sweeps, which cost between £10 and £20, can be used to block gaps at the bottom of doors. For the sides and top, self-adhesive weatherstripping can be an easy and effective solution.
For stubborn leaks, adjusting the door hinges or replacing the seals can work wonders. Ilja pointed out: “Most people think they need to upgrade their heating system when the real problem is simply a poorly sealed door.”
