Matcha is without a doubt the drink of 2025, with more and more people discovering how delicious this Japanese green tea beverage can be. However, it has an unusual taste that might throw you off at first, which is why adding a syrup is a great way to make it more delicious.
And just because it’s almost autumn doesn’t mean it’s time to say goodbye to iced drinks. Autumnal flavours like carrot cake and apple butter have been getting matcha fans excited, with Blank Street releasing these mouth-watering matcha drinks just this week. They’ve also brought back the viral banana bread matcha, but if you don’t fancy spending money on one of these every day, it’s easy to make your own at home.
TikToker Olivia Adriance shared her banana bread matcha recipe last autumn, but now that it’s trending again, it’s the perfect time to try it out.
Thanks to the easy homemade banana syrup, it’s perfectly sweet and spiced, blending together perfectly with the fresh matcha taste. It also works out cheaper than buying a matcha to-go, as these can sometimes cost close to £5.
Taking a sip, Olivia raved that it tasted ‘so good’, with the subtle flavour of banana bread working ‘really well’ in the drink. Here’s how you can make it at home.
Method
To make the banana bread syrup, combine the mashed banana, water, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg in a small pan over a low heat. Bring to a boil then reduce and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Then, take off the heat and stir in the vanilla. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve and pour the banana bread syrup into an airtight glass container – this can be kept in the fridge for up to seven days.
To make the latte, add the water to a small glass or bowl. Spoon the matcha powder through a fine mesh sieve to break up any clumps. The, whisk the matcha into the water in a front to back motion until slightly frothy on top.
Add ice to your serving glass. If you’d prefer the matcha hot, just use hot water instead. Pour in your matcha and top with milk of choice, add two tablespoons of the banana bread syrup, and enjoy.
