Steak is one of those meals that sounds simple to cook in theory, but doesn’t always pan out that way. The incorrect cooking time, prep or accompaniments can ruin your meal, which nobody wants when they’re hungry at the end of the day.
According to one chef and cookbook author, there’s only one sauce you should be serving with your steak – and it doesn’t involve garlic or butter. Eleanor Wilkinson recently took to Instagram to reveal how she makes her steak taste ‘restaurant quality’ every time. And thanks to a couple of cupboard essentials, it’s a lot easier than you might think.
Eleanor, who is famous on social media for her One Pot, One Portion series, recently shared her simple recipe for the Japanese dish of steak donburi.
Packed with flavour and nutrition, this simple dish includes steak, rice and edamame beans, resulting in the perfect filling yet healthy dinner for those nights when you don’t have a lot of time to cook.
And she says the secret to making the delicious steak glaze that’ll make it taste like something straight out of a restaurant is to use soy sauce and mirin only. This combination of salty and sweet is the perfect accompaniment to this meal, and even better, it’s all made in one pot.
Eleanor said: “Forget complicated, multi-pot affairs – this one-portion wonder is your new go-to for effortless gourmet dining. It’s about enjoying restaurant-quality taste without the fuss, perfectly portioned for you.”
Here’s how you can make it at home.
Steak donburi recipe
Ingredients
- Olive or sesame Oil
- One sirloin/ribeye Steak
- Two and a half tbsp soy sauce
- Two and a half tbsp Japanese Mirin
- One pack microwave sticky rice
- Two mini cucumbers, thinly sliced
- 50g edamame beans
- One spring onion, thinly sliced
- Roasted black sesame seeds
- Salt
- Black pepper
Method
Allow your steak to reach room temperature before you start cooking. Once ready, preheat a frying pan over high heat.
Season the steak with salt and pepper and drizzle over a little olive oil. Once the pan is hot, add the steak and cook for up to two minutes on each side, depending on your personal preference.
Once cooked, remove the steak from the pan and let it rest. Add the soy sauce and mirin to the pan and let that simmer, then reduce for about two minutes until you have a sticky but pourable glaze.
Heat the rice in the microwave then add to your serving bowl. Top with the edamame, cucumber and spring onion. Cut the steak into slices and place that on top.
Drizzle over the sauce then finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
