Coleslaw is a fresh and crunchy salad with a bit of a zingy flavour. It pairs well with heavy, fatty, and smoked meats. A traditional coleslaw recipe includes a creamy coleslaw dressing, and most commonly, it’s just mayonnaise.
To jazz it up, cooking enthusiast Lorraine Maharaj took to her TikTok account @tamarindnthyme to share the one ingredient that makes it “that much more delicious” and makes you feel like you’re “in heaven” – sour cream. She captioned the video: “Sour cream makes everything that much more delicious. It is one of those ingredients I always have in my fridge.” Not only does Lorraine boast that this coleslaw recipe is tasty, but she also claims it’s the “easiest” one to follow.
While mayonnaise forms the base of the creamy coleslaw dressing, it’s the sour cream that adds tanginess and creaminess to the dressing, balancing the flavours.
As well as sour cream and mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar are added to the recipe. Apple cider vinegar introduces acidity, brightening the taste of the coleslaw, while the sugar adds a subtle sweetness to balance the vinegar’s acidity.
Ingredients
- One cup of red cabbage, finely sliced or grated
- Six cups of white cabbage, finely sliced or grated
- Two medium carrots, grated
For the dressing
- Half a cup of mayonnaise
- Half a cup of sour cream
- One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
- Two teaspoons of sugar
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- Half a teaspoon of pepper
Method
For this recipe, there are only two easy steps. Start by adding the vegetables to a big bowl before moving on to make the dressing.
For the “heavenly dressing”, combine all of the ingredients listed, then pour it over the veggies and mix it all.
