There’s nothing that ruins the appearance of your garden quite like weeds. These nuisances can spring up on your lawn, in paving stones or in between gravel, and they aren’t always easy to get rid of.
Pulling them up by hand can be really difficult, and chemical weedkillers can end up being harmful to your garden. Thankfully, there are plenty of natural remedies to get rid of weeds that don’t cost an arm and a leg. One of these involves pouring one natural item over them – and it’s not white vinegar.
The experts at Home Building have lifted the lid on how to get rid of weeds using natural methods, and they say lemon juice is fantastic for doing this.
Because there are no harsh chemicals involved, it’s safe for humans, pets and wildlife. And unlike chemicals, lemon juice won’t pollute the ground or nearby water if rain causes it to leak out of the soil.
However, lemon juice and other natural weedkillers can still negatively affect nearby plants – so here’s how to apply it correctly.
How to kill weeds with lemon juice
All you need for a weed-free garden this summer is one lemon. Cut it in half, then squeeze the juice over any weed-heavy areas of your garden.
The experts said: “The citric acid in the lemon should kill the weed within a few days. This method is especially effective when there is strong sun shining on the weeds. The lemon juice can be used as it is, there is no need to dilute it.”
However, be careful where you’re applying the lemon juice. It may also kill other plants, and it can’t target weeds specifically, so try not to get it on other plants or your lawn.
Similarly, salt – another natural item – can also be used to eradicate weeds in your garden.
In a bottle, mix one part salt with two parts water, and pour it directly on to any weeds or in the cracks between your patio. This salty solution will dehydrate the weeds, and it won’t be able to absorb any of the nutrients it needs to grow.
Again, a sunny or at least a dry day is best for this, so that the salt solution doesn’t just get washed away. Leave it to settle overnight, before pulling the weeds out by the root the following day.
