Many find themselves buying unripe avocados and waiting for that perfect magic moment when they are ready for slicing. Whether you have unripe or perfectly ripe avocados, it is important to store them correctly to maintain their freshness for as long as possible.
The most common way to store avocados is to keep them on the worktop, perhaps in a fruit bowl or place them in the fridge. However, doing either of these methods on their own will not give you the best results. TikTok user @hidden.hollow.homestead shared a video for a life-changing way to keep your avocados fresh in the fridge.
The video was captioned: “Tired of avocados going bad too fast? Say goodbye to wasted avocados!
“If yours ripen and rot before you can even enjoy them, this simple trick will change your life.
“Just soak and wash them in vinegar, water, rinse, and store [them] in water in the fridge. Over a week later, and they’re still fresh!”
While it might sound unconventional, bathing avocados in a mix of vinegar and water can eradicate any surface bacteria or contamination, assisting in extending their shelf life.
Although it wasn’t detailed for how long you should keep the avocados soaking in the vinegar water, it’s best to leave it for no longer than two to three minutes, as you might end up with a vinegary taste in your fruit.
After the time is up, rinse them thoroughly under the tap to remove the vinegar solution.
While some people argue that avocados need to be stored dry, as moisture could lead to unwanted bacteria and mould, @hidden.hollow.homestead says to store them in a jar of water.
The logic behind this is that avocados turn brown because they are exposed to oxygen in the air, and they oxidise faster than other produce because of their chemical composition.
But when you store an avocado in water, the flesh is protected by the water from the oxygen, therefore it apparently does not oxidise.
