Hard water contains high amounts of dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium which can cause red or yellow stains to form in toilets.
An anonymous group member took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page and wrote: “Have these brown stains all around the rim of the toiler and I can’t seem to get rid of them.
“I recently moved to the house and it was worse than before and it’s driving me mad.
“I’ve heard it’s because of the hard water here. Can anyone suggest anything that’ll help to remove it?”
The post was commented on more than 50 times by group members all suggesting tips and tricks.

Alison Baxter said: “Harpic black will do the trick, I won’t use anything else on my toilets now. Leave it for an hour and your toilet will be sparkling.”

Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner claims to be 10 times better than bleach gel and is fast-acting against limescale and rust.
The description of the product reads: “Did you know that bleach disinfects but leaves limescale, home to germs, behind?

Other Mrs Hinch fans recommended using cola since the acid in the fizzy drink reacts with the limescale and helps to dissolve it.
Lisa Maloney wrote: “Bottle of cola… leave it overnight, bought mine up a treat.”
To use cola, make sure to buy a full-fat bottle before pouring it down the toilet and leaving it overnight.
Others suggested attempting the 2p coin trick which involves rubbing the coin onto the stubborn limescale. It is thought the coin creates a chemical reaction between copper and limescale.
Lisa Prince said: “A 2p works. I did it with my toilet when I moved into my property. Holding it at a slight angle, just rub the limescale build-up. Almost like you are chipping it away.”
