How Chiefs are approaching Tyreek Hill’s free agency

The Chiefs are circling a reunion with their superstar wide receiver.

Tyreek Hill was informed that he would be released by the Dolphins last week, and speculation immediately centered on a potential return to Kansas City.

ESPN’s Nate Taylor reported that the Chiefs plan to “keep tabs” on Hill throughout the offseason.

Hill is currently recovering from a major knee injury that he sustained against the Jets on a Monday night game on Sept. 29 last season.

Since then, Hill has undergone at least one knee surgery to repair his dislocated knee with multiple torn ligaments, including a torn ACL.

There have been recent reports that Hill will need to go under the knife one more time as part of his recovery process.

With the calendar turning to March and another surgery potentially on deck, any team looking to acquire Hill will have to face the reality that he may not play in 2026.

Given where his recovery is, the Chiefs would likely need a lengthy look at Hill’s rehab before they decide to bring him back in the building.

Kansas City is also in a tough spot in terms of the salary cap. Patrick Mahomes just dramatically restructured his salary for the 2026 season, and he is also dealing with a return from a severe injury

Mahomes tore his ACL in mid-December in a season that ended with a 6-11 record and missing the playoffs.

Hill played his first six seasons with the Chiefs, winning one Super Bowl.

The Chiefs traded Hill to the Dolphins after a strong 2021 season, and was given a massive contract extension by Miami.

Kansas City will have further work to do just to afford Hill, as the Chiefs are still $11.35 million over the cap despite Mahomes’ restructure this year.
