Houseplant warning: Cacti and succulents will ‘decay’ if gardeners mistime this

All you need to do is check the moisture level of the soil by inserting a finger into the soil near the plant. If the soil feels dry, you need to water but if it feels moist then leave it for the moment.

If your cactus or succulent is beginning to shink, shrivel, turn yellow or is soft to the touch then it may be an indication the plant is being overwatered or underwatered.

A moisture meter is an excellent tool for new gardens if they are worried about their houseplant’s water levels, and can be bought on Amazon for between $8 to $15.

Watering both cacti and succulent plants depends on the temperature inside your home, and they will need much more water when growing in the spring and summer.

Ekta said: “For the temperature, anything above 25 degrees is great. Anything too hot or too cold for these kinds of cacti will not work out very well.”

The ideal temperature for cacti and succulents is roughly between 25C and 30C. In temperatures at around 15C the plant will go dormant or begin to develop frost damage, which will lead to stunted growth or even death of the plant.

In a few weeks in springtime, houseplant owners will need to increase how much they are watering their cacti and succulent plants.

However, it is also important that your cactus or succulent is planted in a well-draining plant pot, as water-build up the roots will cause root rot, and disease and could kill the plant.

Since they are desert plants, both cacti and succulents will also require plenty of sunlight and will also need to be placed near a window at this time of year to thrive.

Ekta said: “You can keep them outdoors or near a window to make sure to make sure they get eight to 10 hours of daily sun.”
