Brits have been urged to stock up on batteries before Monday, September 15, as a response to the strong winds expected to hit parts of the UK from this evening (September 14).
A yellow weather warning has been issued for the UK, and is in place from Sunday, September 14, 8 pm to Monday, September 15, 6 pm. The Met Office has informed Brits that the “strong and gusty winds are likely to cause some disruptions to travel and interruptions to power” further making note that “short term loss of power and other services is possible”.
Therefore, according to advice from the weather agency, households should ensure they are well stocked up on batteries ahead.
It highlighted that “people cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance” and the essentials that households are told they should have include batteries, torches, battery candles, and a mobile phone power bank.
Having a large stock of batteries is extremely important to keep torches and battery-powered candles running, in case you are left without power.
To deal with a power cut you should switch off all electrical appliances that shouldn’t be left unattended, leave a light on so you know when the power cut has been fixed, check on your neighbours, and if cold, wrap up warm and close internal doors to keep heat in.
Those in England, Scotland, and Wales can also call 105 for information. The service is free.
Stephen Kocher, Met Office Deputy Chief Meterologist, said: “Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, spreading inland and eastwards during Monday morning.
“Gust of 45 to 55 mph are expected widely inland, while gusts of 60 to 70 mph are possible at times along exposed coasts and hills.”
As of now there are no warnings setting in place for the rest of the week, the Met Office says that the weather will continue with “the unsettled theme”.
It is advised to regularly check your local area’s weather forecast as weather warnings can be changed and update quite quickly.
