Block paving is one of the most eyecatching upgrades for your house, giving you an aesthetically pleasing driveway that doesn’t break down like tarmac or need re-stoning like gravel.
The only downside, apart from the initial cost, is of course the upkeep. Cleaning block paving and keeping it free of weeds and algae as well as moss and mould can be a constant battle in both summer and winter.
But according to block paving companies, there is a way to clean block paving cheaply and easily without needing any special chemicals or expensive solutions – simply by using regular old washing powder. Normally reserved for laundry, washing powder can apparently be used to clear away any and everything growing on block paving that shouldn’t be.
Local firm Block Paving Retford explains: “Washing powder does a great job at cleaning block paving. It gets rid of tough stains, dirt, and debris. The chemicals in it also kill moss and algae that grow on paving.
“You should mix a little washing powder with warm water for a cleaning solution.
“Let this solution sit on the paving for 10 minutes. Then gently scrub it with a soft brush. Block paving looks much better after using this method.
“Before you start, test the solution on a hidden part of the paving.
This makes sure it won’t harm the paving. Be careful with more sensitive natural stone pavers.The washing powder might damage them.
“Firstly, before cleaning block paving with washing powder, make sure you prepare the area. Take any outdoor furniture away to avoid damage. Then, sweep the paving to get rid of big dirt.
“Next, create a solution by mixing a little washing powder with warm water in a bucket. Pour this mix on the paving. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This lets the chemicals work to remove grime and stains.
“After waiting, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the paving in a diagonal way. Be careful not to harm the jointing compound between the blocks.
“Finally, rinse the paving very well with clean water. This cleans off any remaining dirt and detergent.
“For very dirty areas, you might have to do this more than once.”
