It may come as a surprise, but Coca-Cola isn’t just a popular soft drink — it can also serve as an effective household cleaner. Many people struggle with tough stains at the bottom of the toilet bowl that are difficult to remove, no matter how hard they scrub.
However, pouring Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl can help remove stains, loosen mineral deposits, and refresh the surface without the use of harsh chemical cleaners such as bleach. According to natural cleaning company Purdy & Figg, not only is coke sufficient at doing the job, but it’s also far cheaper and less harmful than most of the chemicals on offer.
Thanks to its mild acidity and carbonation, this unconventional cleaning method is both a convenient and budget-friendly option.
“It’s a mixture of the phosphoric and carbonic acid and their gentle power that help to lift stains without damaging the toilet,” say the cleaning expeets. “It’s these ingredients that make a difference, not necessarily those that make up the flavour of Coke.”
While it’s not as strong as traditional toilet cleaners, Coke’s gentle acidity can make a noticeable difference on light buildup or discolouration — especially if used regularly.
“Picture the acidity slowly working its way through the stains, melting them away,” they added. “It can take a while depending on how stubborn the stain is which is why it’s vital to have a suitable cleaning method depending on how bad the toilet condition is.”
It’s important to note that Coca-Cola won’t disinfect your toilet (since it lacks antibacterial properties), but it can be a handy and inexpensive solution for improving appearance and removing surface stains.
How to clean your toilet with Coca-Cola
What you’ll need:
Method
1. Pour the Coca-Cola slowly around the inside rim of the toilet bowl. Make sure the liquid coats the entire surface, especially the areas with noticeable stains or limescale buildup.
2. Allow the Coke to sit in the bowl for at least one hour, or longer for stubborn stains. For best results, you can even leave it overnight. This gives the acidity time to break down mineral deposits and grime.
3. After soaking, use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl thoroughly. The loosened stains should lift away easily. Once you’ve finished scrubbing, flush the toilet to rinse everything clean.
4. If any splashes occurred, wipe down the rim or seat with paper towels or a damp cloth to avoid stickiness.
