September marks the beginning of a new season, making it a great time to tackle some well-needed cleaning tasks. It is the perfect time for households to work to get their homes all warm, cosy, and clean for autumn, which can easily be done with a bit of planning.
There are numerous tasks to consider when preparing your home, including deep cleaning your windows and organising the garden. However, September is the perfect opportunity to complete this one task in particular.
According to cleaning company Fast Klean, organising one’s wardrobe is something that should be on everyone’s September cleaning checklist.
The cleaning company said: “Autumn is the perfect time to go through your wardrobe and sort out your clothes. Pack away summer items and bring out warmer layers.”
Many people are guilty of hanging onto clothing and outfits, whether it is because they think they still have a few wears to get out of them, or they just can’t seem to let them go. Most people struggle with this, which is why the cleaning experts advise people to make the most out of this month and tackle the chore head-on.
Fast Klean: “Take this opportunity to declutter—donate or sell anything you haven’t worn in the last year. Not only will this make finding your autumn essentials easier, but it’ll also give you a bit more breathing space in your closets.”
Decluttering doesn’t have to take all day. Becky Rapinchuk, a cleaning expert and founder of the Clean Mama blog, shared a simple five-step method to “quickly declutter any space”.
The first thing to do is set a timer — the amount of time you dedicate to the task is entirely up to you. The next thing you want to do is remove all items from the area you’re clearing out. This will help you get an idea of how much space you have and how much you want to use up.
Now, it is time to actually sort through the clutter. She advises putting each item in one of four categories: keep, toss, donate, or relocate.
Once you’re done organising everything, wipe or vacuum the area to ensure it is clean, and put all the ‘keep’ items back in place.
The final step is to “assess the area”. Check if there is anything you need to keep the space from cluttering up again, place the ‘relocate’ items in their new place, and take care of the toss and donate items.
