Tourists watched in horror as a man “threw himself off” Majorca’s cathedral and crashed more than 70ft to his death.
There were a number of witnesses to the tragedy but shocked onlookers said it would have been worse a few hours later as thousands of tourists were due to arrive on cruise ships.
Police sealed off the area at the historic walls of ses Voltes in Palma and were said to have moved the body really quickly so that incoming holidaymakers would not have to witness the grisly sight.
The man who died was a 79-year-old tourist from Luxembourg.
At the moment, the death is being treated as a possible suicide but a full investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances.
A witness who saw the tragic incident alerted the emergency services but medics were unable to do anything to save his life.
The man plunged to his death just before 7am today.
Agents from the Police National have reconstructed what happened, with witnesses saying the man “suddenly appeared” on the wall and either fell or jumped.
There have been several accidental and fatal falls on the walls of the Cathedral.
On June 5, 2019, a 45-year-old German tourist accidentally fell from the same place into Ses Voltes at 2amin the morning. The man died instantly. In February of the same year, a woman, approximately 50 years old, died after suffering a serious fall from the wall that surrounds La Seu.
Also, in 2017, a woman, of Spanish nationality and 55 years old, lost her life when she fell from this same wall.
Locals say safety measures have to be taken as a matter of urgency.
One said: “A glass or a high fence would have to be put up so that people do not fall because there are many who have fallen.”
And another added: “There are already many cases. The walls are too low and many unsuspecting people show their lack of prudence by leaning out and even climbing them.”
