Six people have died and several others were injured after a horror fire ripped through a two-storey building. The blaze broke out at a home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, shortly before 1.40am on Thursday morning, local time. Officials said the blaze appears to have begun on the second floor before it spread throughout the low-rise building. More than 230 fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the scene. Firefighters were seen pouring water onto the building, with the air filled with thick smoke.
Ladders were raised above the home as crews worked to snuff out the flames, and looked for any hidden areas burning behind walls and siding. Firefighters said they found the bodies of four adults inside the building.
Two others, a man and a woman, were rushed to hospital in a critical condition, where they later sadly died. Meanwhile, three people sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries, one had “serious” non-life-threatening injuries. Three firefighters also sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said.
The fire is said to have caused the second floor and staircase to collapse, and spread to a nearby building. The FDNY said the main body of fire was extinguished at 2.38 am, local time.
First responders managed to get the fire under control, and remained at the scene on Thursday morning. It’s not yet known what caused the fire.
FDNY said HazMat was requested over the presence of a lithium-ion battery, but it is unknown if it is related to the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
Multiple residents were displaced by the incident, and received support regarding temporary housing from the American Red Cross.
FDNY said operations are ongoing.
