A British man in his sixties was found dead in a hotel room on the Costa del Sol a day after he was supposed to have checked out.

The body of the tourist, who is thought to have been staying alone at an unnamed hotel in the Spanish city of Fuengirola, was discovered by staff on Friday, February 21.

Employees at the resort on Avenida Santa Amalia found the Brit at around 9:40am on Friday, a day after his stay was supposed to have ended.

Sources close to the investigation said there were “no immediate signs of a violent death”, English-speaking newspaper The Olive Press reported.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out to shed more light on the death, and a Policia Nacional investigation is believed to be active after the scene was cordoned off last week.

It comes just days before the body of another man of roughly the same age was pulled out of a port 70km along the Spanish coast on Sunday, February 23.

The British tourist was found floating in the Puerto de la Duquesa, a popular part of Malaga, shortly before 4:30am on Sunday, according to local news outlet Manilva.ws.

Spain’s Civil Guard denied that the incident was connected to gunshots reportedly heard shortly before the corpse was discovered in the marina.

Emergency services recieved 122 phone calls before dispatching the Civil Guard, fire brigade and local police force to the scene.

The man, who was said to be around 60-years-old and fully clothed, was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water.

Malaga and Fuengirola are two of the Costa del Sol’s most popular tourist cities, with the region regularly topping rankings of Brit-favourite holiday destinations.

The southern Spanish region, which spans coastal towns and communities across over 150km of coastline, recorded its best ever year for tourism in 2024.

According to data from the Turismo Costa del Sol, around 474,000 more visitors travelled to the sunny region last year than in 2023, marking a rise of just over 3%.
