Honouring veterans isn’t just about parades – we must stand up for heroes | UK | News

Today, Britain marks 80 years since VE Day – a moment to remember our greatest generation who gave everything to defeat Nazi tyranny. As the country falls silent, I’ll be thinking of my grandad, Bill Streeting, who served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Like millions of Express readers, I feel a deep gratitude for our Armed Forces – past and present. They are heroes, and when they need our NHS, they deserve the best care we can give.

Too often, veterans face health problems that go unrecognised or unsupported – from PTSD to injuries sustained in combat. Often these brave men and women don’t declare their service when they’re being treated, but we know it can have an enormous impact on their health. This has got to change.

That’s why today, I’m announcing a new national training programme for NHS staff to better understand and support our veterans, service personnel, and their families.

Starting this October, frontline staff will be trained to better identify veterans and understand their unique needs – whether it’s a GP, an A&E nurse, or a mental health specialist.

By equipping healthcare professionals to recognise specific challenges, like the impact of frequent relocations or reluctance to disclose trauma, we’ll ensure our veterans receive the personalised care they deserve.

This is about living up to the Armed Forces Covenant – our promise that no one who serves should be left behind.

Veterans’ charities tell me the same thing again and again: too many ex-servicemen and women feel forgotten when they leave the military.

This new training is part of our £26 billion investment to fix the NHS through our Plan for Change and make sure it works for everyone – including those who’ve risked everything to serve our country.

The Express has always stood by our Armed Forces. And your readers know – honouring our heroes isn’t just about parades and speeches.

It’s about action. It’s about making sure they get the care they deserve. Because those who served Britain must be properly served in return.
