Homeowners parking cars on driveways could get fines up to £100 under little-known rule | UK | News

UK homeowners who park their vehicles on their driveways could receive £100 fines for not following a lesser-known rule. Those having multiple cars are more likely to breach this new rule, leading to attention from their local council.

Motoring experts stated that properties with multiple cars or small driveways where owners must squeeze in could end up paying the fine. Graham Conway, a motoring expert at Select Car Leasing, stated: “It may come as a surprise, but a cluttered or overloaded driveway may lead to a fine, particularly if items or parked vehicles are spilling out onto public pathways or blocking visibility for other road users.

“UK law states that vehicles should not obstruct pavements or be parked in a way that causes inconvenience or danger.”, reports Birmingham Live.

“If your driveway is overflowing and cars are sticking out onto the street, you could be hit with a penalty charge notice of up to £100, depending on your local council.

“However, you can avoid this by making sure all cars are parked fully on your property and not covering kerbs or verges.

“If your household has more cars than space, consider applying for resident permits or rotating parking to stay within the rules.”

Pavements should remain unobstructed to allow safe passage for parents with prams, wheelchair users, and those with mobility challenges.

Vehicle owners are also encouraged to remove any oil or fluid stains that may accumulate when a car remains parked in one spot for extended periods.

Failing to address these spills could lead to future complications.
