Cinnamon rolls can be savoured at any time of day, but regardless of when they’re consumed, they’re always finest served warm from the oven. That’s why making them from scratch delivers the best results for perfectly sweet and fluffy bakes every single time.

One food blogger, Chocolate Covered Katie, has revealed the ultimate recipe for novices on her blog. Katie insists that the recipe requires just four ingredients. Katie said: “These magical cinnamon rolls take under an hour to make, from start to finish. They turn out just as soft, gooey, and delicious as classic homemade cinnamon rolls from scratch, without all the work!” According to the food blogger, the key to the four-ingredient formula is using pizza dough.

Katie maintained that this recipe works with wholemeal pizza dough and gluten-free varieties, so there are plenty of options to suit every palate.

Ingredients

  • 16oz pizza dough
  • Two tablespoons of butter, coconut oil or apple sauce (for a low-fat alternative)
  • Three tablespoons of sugar
  • Two or three teaspoons of ground cinnamon

Method

Preheat the oven to 200C, then prepare the rolls. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface.

According to Katie, this could be done with any flour, even coconut varieties. She recommended adding more flour gradually if the dough becomes too sticky to roll out.

Continue rolling until it measures just under one-quarter of an inch thick.

In a bowl, mix the butter, sugar and cinnamon to create a paste, then spread across the dough in one uniform layer. Slice into long strips and then roll each one up as tightly as possible to create the swirl pattern.

Pop the rolls in a greased baking tin and place in the preheated oven (200C). Bake for 20 minutes until firm but still gooey.

Serve plain or garnish with a simple cinnamon roll glaze made from one and a half cups of icing sugar and two to four tablespoons of milk.

Whisk the ingredients together until the glaze is thick but loose enough to drizzle over the rolls with a spoon.
