High above the sprawl of Los Angeles, Yamashiro Hollywood has spent more than a century pairing dinner with one of the most jaw-dropping views of the city.
But the newest buzz around Yamashiro arrives at the end of the meal.
The restaurant has introduced a playful showstopper known as the Fortune Cookie Smash Cake, a dessert designed to be cracked open tableside. The oversized fortune-cookie-shaped confection arrives with a petite wooden mallet, inviting diners to literally smash their sweet finale.
Inside the chocolate shell, guests discover premium chocolate truffles and a personalized fortune tucked at the center.
The interactive treat was created in collaboration with acclaimed pastry chef Chris Ford, the creative force behind the brand Butter Love & Hard Work. Known for his dramatic crack-open chocolate desserts, Ford brings his signature style to the exclusive hilltop experience.
The handcrafted dessert is part spectacle and part indulgence, designed for celebrations and the kind of Instagram moment diners love to capture before the first swing of the mallet.
Priced around $95, the Fortune Cookie Smash Cake must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance and can be customized with a message, making it a popular choice for birthdays, anniversaries and even surprise proposals. The limited-time dessert adds another reason to visit Yamashiro, where dinner already comes with one of the most cinematic views in the City of Angels.
The storied hilltop property first opened in 1914 as a Japanese-inspired private estate. Today, it stands as one of Southern California’s most recognizable dining destinations, famous for its historic architecture, lush gardens and sweeping vantage point over the glittering skyline.
The experience starts before guests even reach the dining room. Stone pathways wind through peaceful koi ponds and manicured Zen gardens, giving the property the feel of a secluded hillside hideaway tucked above the bustle of Hollywood.
Inside, the mood shifts to warm and romantic. Wood interiors, soft lighting and historic touches set the stage for date nights, celebrations and special occasions.
Several dining spaces offer different perspectives of the city lights below. Guests looking for a dramatic backdrop often gravitate to the Sunset Dining Room, where expansive windows frame Los Angeles stretching for miles. The Skyview Room delivers another coveted perch, especially once night falls and downtown begins to sparkle.
The kitchen leans into a blend of Japanese flavors and contemporary American cooking. Sushi and sashimi share the spotlight with grilled specialties and shareable plates. Crowd favorites include the Ninja and Dragon rolls, spicy tuna crispy rice, Wagyu sukiyaki and earthy matcha soba noodles. A curated list of cocktails and premium sake keeps the evening flowing.
