A Devon town boasting its own castle and a wealth of independent retailers serves as a genuine treasure for those seeking something special.

Art galleries, antique dealers and remarkable gift boutiques are flourishing along the high street of Totnes – whilst this charming settlement sits nestled within breathtaking countryside.

Should you desire a retreat from Devon’s bustling coastal resorts or crave distinctive shopping experiences, then Totnes presents an excellent choice.

A market operates on most days within the heart of this vibrant town’s high street, radiating positive energy throughout.

The town has earned recognition for its independent shops – guaranteeing visitors will discover extraordinary items that differ vastly from Britain’s typical high street offerings.

This southwestern English town has gained fame for its bohemian atmosphere, artistic residents and mystical ambience – situated upon a ley line, those invisible ancient spiritual pathways believed to connect important locations throughout Britain.

Consequently, free spirits and mystical enthusiasts have flocked to the settlement since the 1960s and 70s, with its otherworldly reputation persisting today – the residents even successfully ousted Costa Coffee from their community.

One visitor said about the town online: “The high street throbs with trails of diverse colourful locals and tourists commingling.

“People are so friendly that everyone calls you love or darling, there’s something down to earth and authentic about Totnes that makes you want to go back again to return to the trail.”

Visitors can also explore Totnes Castle – a remarkably well-preserved ancient Norman motte and bailey fortress featuring an historic tower dating back to the 12th century.

One shop in the town, the Magical Earth Emporium, is famous for its crystals and ‘witchy’ merchandise, though you’ll equally discover authentic Devon bakeries – and naturally an abundance of traditional pasties.

There are numerous pubs scattered throughout the town alongside plenty of cafés or restaurants where you can enjoy a Devon cream tea if you fancy it.

It’s straightforward to venture out to the countryside as well, with riverside strolls at the nearby Dartington Estate where wildlife and breathtaking views are plentiful.

The Dartington Estate website outlines what you can experience close to the town of Totnes: “Boasting over 800 acres of verdant forests, abundant wildlife and clear rivers, the Dartington estate offers the perfect backdrop to walks of all lengths and difficulties.

“Experience a sense of tranquillity at our impressive Grade II listed gardens, which have been shaped and inspired by the remarkable custodians of this special place for over 1,000 years.

“On your visit to the 26 acres of tended grounds, you’ll find a range of stunning features with beautiful vistas and creative sculptures, including ancient trees and impressive plant species.”
