Liechtenstein is not a common name when it comes to holiday hotspots, yet the tiny nation packs a lot for tourists into its borders.

At just 160 square kilometres, it is one of Europe’s best kept secrets, yet it is full of character and beauty. It feels as though it has been pulled straight out of a fairytale, with its castles and charming villages, which makes one wonder why it isn’t more popular. Its capital, Vaduz, feels more like a quiet mountain town as opposed to a bustling capital city. Tourists can wander its winding streets, immersing themselves in both traditional architecture and modern buildings, including a variety of art galleries and museums.

For those looking to explore some nature, Liechtenstein is the perfect place, with an abundance of quiet hiking trails that are incredibly scenic.

It is also the perfect place for tourists to cycle, and also ski during the winter months.

In 2024, tourists spent over 200,000 nights here, making it the European destination with the fewest annual visitors.

In second place is North Macedonia, where tourists spent around 2 million nights in 2024.

The country is home to Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its ancient lakeside setting and Ottoman architecture.

In third place is Luxembourg. Despite being one of Europe’s wealthiest nations, it still remains under the tourism radar.

In it, one can find both ancient and modern elements, from historic fortresses to contemporary European institutions.
