The 24-hour closure of Heathrow Airport is causing major travel carnage set to impact thousands of travellers around the world. The major international air hub, which serves around 200,000 people daily, was affected by a fire at a substation located in Hayes, 1.5 miles away.
As the blaze sparked a power outage affecting the airport, Heathrow bosses decided to close the key international hub for the day. A Heathrow spokesperson urged people not to head to the airport until it’s closed, and warned disruption may last for days. The statement said: “To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, we have no choice but to close Heathrow until 23h59 on 21 March 2025. We expect significant disruption over the coming days and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens.”
