'Heartbreaking' period drama leaves 'fans crying into pillows' axed by BBC in days

Period drama fans have just days left to stream a celebrated film praised for its elegant direction and stunning cinematography before it is removed from BBC iPlayer.

Atonement (2007) is an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s bestselling novel. Set against the backdrop of pre-war England and the Second World War, the story begins in 1935 at a country estate where a single misunderstanding by young Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) has devastating consequences for her older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and Cecilia’s lover Robbie Turner (James McAvoy).

Briony’s false accusation results in Robbie’s imprisonment and subsequent conscription into the army. The narrative then follows each character through the turmoil of war and years of regret and separation, exploring themes of love, guilt and the search for redemption.

Directed by Joe Wright, Atonement features an acclaimed ensemble cast including James McAvoy as Robbie Turner, Keira Knightley as Cecilia Tallis, Saoirse Ronan as Briony Tallis (with Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave portraying older versions), Brenda Blethyn, Benedict Cumberbatch and Juno Temple.

The film is renowned for its visual artistry – “flawless direction and cinematography that is nothing short of sublime,” as one reviewer described, writing on film criticism platform Rotten Tomatoes – and includes the now-iconic five-minute tracking shot on Dunkirk beach.

Atonement’s evocative score by Dario Marianelli is also repeatedly singled out for praise.

As aother review notes: “The soundtrack, the acting, the cinematography is just masterful… If you want to experience what a great piece of considered cinema looks like, this is it.”

Atonement received widespread critical acclaim upon release. It won the Oscar for Best Original Score (Dario Marianelli), two BAFTAs including Best Production Design, and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards in total – including Best Picture – and helped launch Saoirse Ronan’s international career.

“If you enjoy yearning, heartbreak, and crying into your pillow at 2 AM, Atonement is the film for you… By the end, you’ll be staring at the screen, tear-streaked and questioning life… A masterpiece in pain”, summed up one fan.

Atonement will be removed from the BBC iPlayer catalogue on Thursday, August 8.
