GTA 6 delayed – Games to keep you busy until the new Grand Theft Auto 6 release date

Deep down we all knew it was coming. In fact, I predicted it over a year ago.

Indeed, after months of silence, Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar Games finally gave fans the news they had been dreading, announcing that GTA 6 is delayed until May 26, 2026.

According to a statement, Rockstar Games explained that it needs extra time to deliver “at the level of quality you expect and deserve”, before promising to share more details soon.

On the plus side, 2025 has already been kind to gamers, and there are still lots of great games to come, which should help to fill the gap between now and next May when GTA 6 finally (hopefully) makes its debut.

Here are some game recommendations to keep fans busy until GTA 6 launches in 2026.

Atomfall

Atomfall – Out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Atomfall blends together the likes of Fallout, Dead Island and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture into a uniquely British survival experience that deserves more than its 74-rating on Metacritic.

While the intriguing narrative, distinct setting and compelling cast of characters help Atomfall stand out from similar style releases, it’s the way the adventure plays out that has propelled it to near the top of the games I’ve played so far in 2025.

Exploring the semi-open world feels much more organic than other games, rewarding curious players with new weapons, items and story beats every time they go off the beaten path.

GTA may be the king of open-world games, but the world of Atomfall is every bit as rewarding, as you never know what you’ll find around the next corner.

My only complaint is that I wish it was a bit longer, although sometimes less is more.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered

Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered – Out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

If you like open-world games, then you owe it to yourself to play one of the GOATs in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which has just received a remaster courtesy of developer Virtuous.

Much like Atomfall, Oblivion is at its best when players simply venture out and explore the gargantuan map with its lush fields, medieval towns and forests. It’s a game that’s jam-packed with distractions that are arguably more fun than following the quest markers.

Needless to say, the remaster features upgraded visuals and improved gameplay, featuring new combat systems, superior archery and lots more.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Doom: The Dark Ages – May 15 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

If you enjoy GTA’s chaotic action and games where you get to shoot things with reckless abandon, then Doom: The Dark Ages is the perfect substitute for GTA 6.

Doom: The Dark Ages is actually a prequel to the Doom series, taking place in what has been described as a “techno medieval” setting, complete with weapons that fire bone fragments, not to mention maces and flails.

If it’s anywhere near as fun as its predecessors then fans should be in for a treat.

The Precinct

The Precinct – May 13 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

The Precinct provides a unique twist on the classic GTA formula, putting players in the shoes of the cops instead of the criminals.

The demo sees players work the beat, write tickets, arrest criminals and participate in high-speed chases throughout the gritty open-world city.

If the game opens up and introduces some compelling characters and interesting missions, then it could be one of this year’s sleeper hits.

Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring Nightreign – May 30 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

If you’re looking for an online multiplayer game to keep you busy in the wake of the GTA 6 Online delay, then Elden Ring Nightreign has the potential for hundreds of hours of co-operative gameplay.

Set in a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring, players must “outlast a three day-and-night cycle”, culminating in a boss battle at the end of the adventure.

It’s described as a “condensed action RPG”, where players will never experience the same journey twice.

There’s a roguelike element to the game, with players earning relics to to customise and upgrade their characters for future runs and increase stats.

Judging by the trailer, we’ll also get enemies and characters from other FromSoftware releases, including Dark Souls 3.
