Greek islands just as pretty as Santorini with barely any crowds | Europe | Travel

The Greek islands are a beloved holiday destination, offering blue skies, stunning beaches, fantastic eateries and iconic architecture. The likes of Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes often spring to mind when envisioning the ideal summer getaway.

However, these popular spots can draw large crowds, potentially off-putting for those seeking a more tranquil retreat. Fortunately, Greece’s coastline is dotted with smaller islands that offer the same cultural immersion and picturesque landscapes without the hustle and bustle typically associated with holidays. One such gem is Tilos, nestled between Kos and Rhodes in the Aegean Sea.

The island is one of the smallest, with around 746 people, and doesn’t have as many tourists or the recognition it deserves.

The capital of the Tilos is Megalo Chorio, which is located at the bottom of Merovigli mountain.

The top of the mountain is home to a medieval castle called the ‘Castle of Knights’. The island is known for its herbs and the hometown of famous Greek poet Irinna alongside its relaxing beaches and villages.

Chios, the fifth largest of Greece’s islands and ranked as the tenth among the Mediterranean giants, attracts tourists in its main town while also offering tranquil respite in its many serene yet less-known villages.

The island caters to varying holiday desires, flaunting an impressive array of entertainment options like dining spots, cafes, and cosy bars.

As travel experts Greeka have put it: “Chios is a very beautiful island that is still quite untouched by tourism despite its various beauties such as its wonderful beaches and its superb medieval villages.

“Low tourism is due to the fact that Chios was economically self-sufficient for many years.”

They continued, praising the island’s allure: “The tranquillity and authenticity of Chios, along with its varied and verdant landscape, its fine villages and its idyllic beaches make this island an excellent holiday destination.”

Samos, a beloved destination with a population of 33,000, offers numerous tranquil spots for relaxation. Among these, Mikri Lakka Beach stands out as an idyllic location where tourists can bask along its sandy shores and immerse themselves in the stunning natural surroundings.

Discover Greece highlighted the beach’s allure, stating: “It’s one of the smaller and most secluded beaches in Samos, protected from the wind and with fine pebbles and shells and calm blue waters.”

When it comes to Greek islands you must see, Amorgos stands tall on the list. It boasts staggering crystal-clear vistas perfect for sightseeing, thanks to its volcanic topography.

While there isn’t a direct flight available, journeying to Santorini and then sailing off towards Amorgos via ferry comes highly recommended for adventurers.

The user-friendly website also earned their approval. The traveller expressed their enthusiasm, they said: “Every year we book our Greek island ferries through Greece and every year I’m impressed with their service.

“Text messages promptly if any changes occur, and extremely friendly people to help with any changes required, especially last minute which can sometimes happen in Greece. The site is also easy and clear to use. We’re big fans.”
