Greece, Spain and Portugal are way too hot – head to this city instead | Europe | Travel

But for those looking to escape the scorching sun without giving up beautiful views, a stunning alternative can be found in Switzerland, and some travellers say it’s even “better”.

The lakeside city of Lucerne, nestled at the foot of the Alps, is becoming a favourite for so-called “coolcations”.

Average July temperatures here hover around 24C, according to MeteoSwiss, and are ideal for sightseeing, outdoor adventures or just relaxing without the risk of heatstroke.

Surrounded by mountains and sitting on the shores of Lake Lucerne, the city has everything from postcard-perfect scenery to rich history and culture.

One of the most visited spots is the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), which features a 14th-century tower and painted interior panels.

It is considered one of Switzerland’s most photographed spots.

Nearby, visitors can also explore the old town, ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway up Mount Pilatus, or take a stunning lake cruise.

There’s also the Swiss Museum of Transport, one of the country’s top attractions, and a buzzing food scene full of lakeside cafés, traditional fondue restaurants, and stylish bars.

While Switzerland has a reputation for being pricey, many budget-conscious tourists are finding ways to visit for less, from off-peak rail deals to affordable local eateries.

And it’s not just the views and cooler weather that impress. Reviews on TripAdvisor are glowing.

One visitor wrote: “Lucerne reminded me of Lisbon, but without the crowds, and I wasn’t dripping with sweat the whole time.”

Another said: “It’s like a cleaner, calmer version of Barcelona, with the bonus of lake swimming and Alpine air.”

A third reviewer added: “The old town gives you Santorini vibes with colourful buildings and water views, but I actually preferred it. Lucerne is cooler, calmer, and full of charm.”
