Grease is among the most stubborn stains to deal with when it comes to laundry. Oily marks happen all the time and can cling to fabrics – even after a spin through the washing machine. While many people turn to vinegar for household cleaning, it’s not always the best choice for tackling grease stains on clothing. In fact, according to one expert, a far more effective solution is probably already sitting next to your kitchen sink.
Cleaning pro Laura de Barra has become a trusted source of household advice, with her useful tips often going viral online. The Irish author and property portfolio developer made a name for herself with her bestselling book Gaff Goddess, and she’s known for simplifying everyday cleaning tasks.
In a video that’s racked up over 1.9 million views on TikTok, Laura tackled the all too common grease stain and revealed that the solution doesn’t involve vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, or expensive stain removers.
“This works even if you’ve washed the garment already,” Laura prefaced, demonstrating on a navy jumper with a visible grease mark.
“So all you wanna do: some regular washing up liquid, and then you just want to rub it into the stain. Then you’ll wash as normal.”
The method is low-effort and low-cost, and according to Laura, the trick lies in its direct application.
“If the stain’s been on there a long time, you may need to do this twice, but it will come out,” she said. “Also, air dry, don’t use heat as some food grease stains may have dye in them.”
Viewers were quick to confirm the results, with one user saying: “Can confirm it works a treat,” and another adding, “Washing up liquid every time. Works a treat.”
Though some shared their own alternatives – including hand cleanser and even white chalk – Laura’s approach remains the simplest for most households.
