A terrifying stabbing spree near the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC has resulted in multiple injuries, with police cordoning off the area. DC police have confirmed that four women and three men were stabbed around 3.45pm local time (8.45pm BST) this afternoon.

A man, described by police as being in an “altered mental state”, was arrested after he began attacking a female acquaintance and then turned on bystanders, including two brave individuals who tried to intervene. Among the victims were a grandmother and her two granddaughters.

The scene was swarming with emergency services, including numerous police vehicles, ambulances and a fire engine. All seven victims have been rushed to hospital but are currently stable.

Chief Pamela Smith of the DC Metropolitan Police labelled the incident a “senseless assault”. She revealed that the suspect was found “laying in the ground”, reports The Mirror.

She displayed a photograph of a blood-soaked knife believed to be the weapon used by the assailant. The police chief added: “Based on preliminary investigations, it appears the suspect was in an altered mental state from an unknown substance.

“He began stabbing himself, and then stabbed a female acquaintance who was also with him. The suspect then stabbed others standing outside in the block. Two Good Samaritans – and we are very grateful for them this afternoon – tried to intervene in the assault and were among those injured.”

The official expressed condolences, saying: “I want to offer my thoughts to the victims, their families and those who witnessed today’s events. This incident highlights the need for assistance of substance abuse issues within communities.”

In an initial statement, police reported: “MPD is on scene of numerous people stabbed in the area of Meigs Pl and Montello Ave NE. One suspect has been arrested. PIO en route to the scene.”

Drivers in the vicinity were urged to take detours. The incident occurred in Northeast Washington, near the National Arboretum, Mount Olivet Cemetery, and Gallaudet University.
