The races that followed the Grand National were postponed while two fallen horses were assessed by experts. Broadway Boy and Celebre D’Allen fell during the headline race but have walked onto horseboxes for further assessment.
Broadway Boy had been leading the race when he suffered a horror fall over a hurdle around three-quarters into the race. The seven-year-old, who later walked onto a horse ambulance, fell upright onto his front legs before planting his face into the ground. Jockey Tom Bellamy came tumbling off the saddle and has been taken to Aintree University Hospital for further checks.
All other jockeys returned to the weighing room.
Celebre D’Allen had fallen earlier in the race and walked into the horsebox after lengthy assessment. He returned to his stables for more testing. An inquiry has been called into the riding by jockey Michael Nolan.
Nick Rockett eventually won the Grand National. Due to the lengthy assessment of Broadway Boy and Celebre D’Allen, the following races were postponed.
The Rosconn Group Maghull Novices’ Chase was due to begin at 5pm and eventually started 14 minutes later. It was won by Kalif Du Berlais. Another race, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open NH Flat Race, is scheduled for 5.35pm but could start later.
