If you’re sick of city life, Tynemouth is a great place to visit – especially as it’s only half hour from Newcastle’s city centre. As one of the region’s most popular seaside villages, it’s the ideal destination for a low-key day out or weekend break during the autumn.
In Tynemouth, visitors witness the spectacular Tynemouth Priory and Castle, an English Heritage property that is best visited at any time of year, but the real showstoppers are the beautiful beaches in the area. Tynemouth Longsands is a mile-long stretch of beach frequented by surfers and families on those warmer days, while King Edward’s Bay is a smaller cove.
Both of the serene beaches have been recognised for their cleanliness, having received Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. Not to mention, right along the beach you can enjoy some of the tastiest fish and chips as you listen to the calming sounds of waves crashing against the shore.
If you’re visiting on a weekend, the famed Tynemouth Market is an absolute must-see, with plenty of goods to pick up. From books to vintage clothing and delicious street food, locally handmade gifts and roasted coffee, it offers everything for a perfect Sunday stroll.
Those hoping for a slightly more quirky shopping experience should find themselves at Tynemouth’s Green Ginger Arcade, which is home to a wide range of independent boutiques. Not to mention, it hosts an authentic 1950s-inspired diner, for a piece of the past sitting in a corner of the seaside.
When the weather is looking dreary and the family wants to escape the cold, Tynemouth Aquarium offers entertainment for hours. You can experience close encounters with a huge variety of incredible aquatic creatures, from the likes of seals and sharks to clownfish, seahorses and stingrays.
While you are there, you can get the chance to see the animals being fed and watch the breathtaking seal show, meaning you can experience the sea without ever having to step foot into it when the tide is high and the breeze is far too cold.
When the sun is shining, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the fresh sea through numerous water activities. Both The Tynemouth Surf Co. and Longsands Surf School offer surfing lessons for kids and adults of all kinds of capabilities.
As well as this, there is an outdoor activity company, known as CBK Adventure Co, which offers “seaside escapades”. These include paddleboarding, kayaking and coasteering, as you explore the beautiful British coastline with all the help and safety you need.
