No sherpas necessary.
Gorillaz just announced they’re going to lead their fans Monkeyz on ‘The Mountain Tour’ this fall in support of their 25th anniversary and recently-released ninth studio album with the same name.
The North American run will send Damon Albarn and 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, Russel along with special guests Little Simz and Deltron 3030 to arenas, pavilions and festivals all over the U.S. and Canada from mid-September through Halloween.
That includes two New York and New Jersey gigs. They’re scheduled to go down at:
Freedom Mortgage Pavilion
Camden, NJ
Sunday, Sept. 27
Madison Square Garden
New York, NY
Tuesday, Sept. 29
Ahead of the tour announcement, Gorillaz debuted their new Indian-inspired and death-obsessed record over two nights at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium shows. At those gigs, the genre-defying group played 20 songs per concert, according to Set List FM.
Along with special guests, they performed “The Mountain” in full with special guests Sparks, Black Thought, Joe Talbot Asha Puthli and Kara Jackson before closing with a short “second set” that included fan favorites “California and the Slipping of the Sun,” “Rock The House,” “Dirty Harry,” “Feel Good Inc.” and “Clint Eastwood.”
“Without a single dull moment, Gorillaz’s show was a testament to the band’s ability to stay fresh,” The Daily Bruin reported in a 4.5-star review of their first Hollywood Palladium gig. “After receiving some criticisms for the safe sound of their previous album, the band’s lively performance proved that, after 25 years, Gorillaz is not afraid to experiment with unknown elements.”
In addition to the forthcoming outing, the “On Melancholy Hill” outfit will also serve as the musical guest on the March 7 episode of “Saturday Night Live” alongside host Ryan Gosling.
Concert tickets for the North American leg of ‘The Mountain Tour’ first become available through a pre-sale that starts Friday, March 6 at 10 am local time.

Gorillaz new music
On Feb. 27, Gorillaz released their ninth studio album “The Mountain.”
Upon first listen, the album didn’t connect with this humble critic. As a long-time fan, I was expecting something more explosive or heartbreaking; “The Mountain” felt like neither.
However, after a few days away, I’ve hiked up “The Mountain” a second time and found a quiet beauty that still has the ability to get listeners on their feet while maybe shedding a tear.
The slow build begins with the opening title track, an instrumental sitar piece that lets you know Gorillaz aren’t going anywhere in a hurry. For a group with an animated character named Noodle, this is a rather mature statement.
Their journey continues on a slightly more Gorillaz-y trajectory with the dance-y yet spiritual “The Moon Cave,” ebullient, disco-y “The Happy Dictator” (with Sparks!), lo-fi tearjerker “Orange County,” funky slow-jam “The God of Lying” and sing-song-y bop “The Manifesto.”
Albarn’s sullen crooning — and outtakes from deceased collaborators (Dennis Hopper, Bobby Womack, Tony Allen) — over sparkling synths give the record heft on cuts like “The Empty Dream Machine,” “The Plastic Guru” and “Delirium” (which descends into full disco-fried punk anarchy nearly three minutes in as you might guess from the title) but the highlight of highlights here is the sensitive “The Sad God,” which closes “The Mountain” on a triumphant moment that’s equal parts celebratory and reflective.
Exactly what you feel when you get to the top…or return to the ground floor after finishing your climb.
Give this one a listen or three.
You can find “The Mountain” here.
