Gorgeous plants to draw the moisture from the air to help prevent condensation and mould

Condensation on the windows is commonplace in the cold, wintry months, which can encourage mould spores to develop and spread.

Get ahead of any mould growth by treating yourself to new gorgeous-looking plants.

Experts at Plan-It Windows recommended purchasing humidity-absorbing houseplants that naturally absorb moisture from the air.

The experts noted how peace lilies and Boston ferns, for example, help to control humidity and add an aesthetic touch to your home.

Peace lilies

The Royal Horticultural Society pointed out that the lovely peace lilies are easy to look after.

Peace lilies don’t require any pruning and they are generally free from pests and diseases.

Patch Plants says the elegant peace lily likes to be put in an area of indirect sunlight.

The houseplant will be most comfortable in a room temperature that you would be comfortable in too.

“Lightly water when the top inch of soil feels dry,” the experts advised.

However, while easy to look after, they do have a preference for rainwater compared to tap water.

Peace lilies are a perfect addition to steamy bathrooms and kitchens, as they love the humidity, but will also help to keep mould at bay.

Boston ferns

The RHS says the indoor plant is “one of the easiest indoor ferns to grow”. Also ideal for a steamy bathroom, they like to be placed in bright, indirect light.

Country Gardener Magazines listed more plants that help to keep mould at bay, such as:

  • Snake plant
  • Spider plant
  • Orchids.

Snake plants, for example, should only be watered fortnightly, said Patch Plants.

These anti-mould houseplants favour sunlight but are hardy enough to survive with little access to sunlight.

They do, however, grow best in warmer environments, especially being classed as a succulent.
