In the heart of the Baltic region, Lithuania is home to undiscovered treasures and a city worthy of postcard envy, boasting beautiful landscapes with a blend of rich history and natural beauty.

This small country is often overlooked by tourists, but is rapidily gaining recognition as one of Europe’s best hidden gems, and its capital city Vilnius has been named the cheapest capital city to visit in 2025. It has also been named as the second-best among 30 must-see global destinations and the number one destination in Europe in a new ranking.

Post Ofiice Travel Money reported that the cost of visiting Lithuania is just over a third of what you would pay to go to Amsterdam. According to Budget Traveller, you can even enjoy a refreshing Lithuanian beer for just £1.25.

The city is the perfect city break escape that doesn’t include breaking the bank, as it is the most affordable in the whole of Europe.

The picturesque city known for its baroque architecture welcomed over one million people in 2023, significantly less than other European tourist hotspots like Prague which welcomed more than seven million tourists in the same year.

The overall cost for a trip for two to Vilnius comes to just under £300.

The most affordable accommodation with a cosy feel Vilnius offers is just £91 for 3 nights with positive reviews. One hotel guest of “House of Sun” said: “Rooms were tidy and nice and had real paintings on walls”.

The whole point of a city break is to explore the many amenities the city has to offer. Vilnius offers a self-guided tour as little as £8 per person of ‘The old town of Vilnius”, or a bike tour of the city’s highlights for just £25.

So as you begin to plan your next city escape why not give Vilnius a try, you’ll be away from all the crowds of tourists and, most importantly, you’ll be saving yourself some cash while enjoying all that the city has to offer.
