‘Golden window’ for pruning a peace lily to guarantee plant grows, blooms and flourishes

Peace lilies will provide you with gorgeous white blooms and shiny green foliage for a long time if they are cared for in the right way.

But if there’s one thing that you might find challenging about this plant’s maintenance, it’s pruning it at the right time.

Pruning a peace lily is necessary to maintain its stunning blooms and remove dead or wilting leaves.

Pruning promotes new blooms and growth by removing dying flowers and encouraging the production of new foliage. It also helps control the size and shape of the plant.

Trimming the houseplant will maintain its overall health and aesthetics, besides encouraging new growth.

According to the experts at Lively Root, the “best time to prune your peace lily” is early spring or summer before it blooms.

The experts said: “Consider it a golden window for ensuring your plant’s maximum potential to grow, bloom and flourish.”

Still, it would help to stay watchful for some specific tell-tale signs that your plant needs pruning in the rest of the year, too.

The first cue that owners should pick up on to prune their peace lily is when they notice slow or stunted growth. This is the “first sign of something wrong” with your plant, which pruning might solve.

The second sign is if the houseplant is too big and bushy, and cannot absorb sufficient sunlight or moisture from the soil mix.

Owners may also notice some yellow, brown, damaged, and dried leaves on their peace lily, as well as damaged stalks and brown, spent blooms.

The fourth and final tell-tale sign is that the plant has grown too tall and is almost toppling over.

Overall, regular pruning is “always in the interest of your peace lily”, as it promotes “continuous and healthy blooming”.

To prune a peace lily, the first step is to deadhead the wilted, faded, brown or dried flowers. Use sterilised shears to cut and remove them. This will make your peace lily plant look “neat” and “promote the development of new flowers”.

If the leaves and stalks on the peace lily appear weak and damaged, yellow or with brown tips, remove them to “keep your plant fresh and healthy”.

To avoid spreading any potential pathogens, wipe your shears with a cloth dipped in alcohol. Also, it’s a good idea to wear gloves for your safety, as the sap can irritate the skin.
