Gladiator II star Paul Mescal appeared to make a six-word dig at King Charles III during a recent red-carpet interview.
Asked how it felt to meet King Charles, who also attended the London premiere last week, Paul didn’t appear overly excited that His Majesty had been present.
After stating that he’d never met him before, the actor also told the reporter that, due to being Irish, the prospect was “not on the list of priorities”.
Paul added: “How wild was it? Definitely not something that was in the bingo cards. I’m Irish so it’s not on the list of priorities.
“But it’s an amazing thing for Ridley [Scott] because of how important that is for him to see the film celebrated. In that context was very special.”
The King was spotted beaming from ear to ear as he made his way to the premiere on the eve of his 76th birthday last week.
The premiere, which saw several stars in attendance, took place at the Odeon Luxe at London’s Leicester Square on November 13.
Opting for a smart black suit, the King arrived via a car – with Queen Camilla bowing out due to illness.
The Queen, 77, announced earlier this month that she had been struck down with a chest infection – something which led her to not attend a few planned engagements.
Speaking at the event, actress and filmmaker Emily Mortimer said King Charles demonstrating support towards the people who work in the British Film and TV industry “means so much”.
“I feel like everybody is so excited to be here and it’s very special. It’s like they (the King and Queen) are noticing what’s happening, and that it’s part of the fabric of society.
“We’re all here trying to do something that feels like an important contribution. As performers and people in this industry, it’s nice to remember that actually, you may not do a job that looks like a grown-up job, but it really is an important contribution. Entertaining people is a massively important role.”
