An “opportunistic predator” who committed multiple sexual assaults on a teenage girl has been sentenced to 18 months in jail. The abuse started in 2022 when Abdurahrim Yalcin, 56, of Norman Road, Ramsgate, began to act inappropriately towards his victim, aged just 16 at the time.
He became increasingly depraved, and the assaults became more severe with the victim reporting being touched both over and under her clothing on multiple occasions. Yalcin tried to keep his behaviour a secret and bought the victim clothes as well as offering money in an effort to buy her silence. The victim reported the assaults to police on September 5, 2023, after realising his behaviour was not just escalating, but was unlikely to stop.
In total, the abuse spanned about 10 months. Yalcin was arrested the same day the report was made to police and was subsequently charged with three counts of sexual assault.
He maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance at Folkestone Magistrates Court on June 26, 2024.
Following a three-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of sexual assault.
On Thursday, Yalcin was sentenced to 18 months in jail, and will stay on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
Detective Constable Daniel Dew said: “Yalcin was an opportunistic criminal who saw the vulnerability in his victim and exploited it repeatedly for his own gratification.
“His actions were calculated, predatory, and disturbing.
“I want to praise the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout this process.
“Her testimony and contributions have been vital in securing this sentence, and in bringing this man to justice.”
