Earlier this week, San Francisco Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow announced he will retire following the 2026 season, as he’s been battling a degenerative muscle disease called body myositis for the past two decades.

On Friday, Giants radio play-by-play commentator Jon Miller appeared as a guest on 95.7 The Game and revealed what his phone call was like with Kurkow when he informed him he would be retiring.

“He had the kindness to call me yesterday and …Just let me know person to person,” Miller said. “It was very sad and it was something that we were able to talk personally and remember some stories, and have some laughs, and then I tried to talk him out of it.”

When Miller said he tried to talk Krukow out of retirement, he admitted that he was joking about it, and knew that this was something that was coming for a long time.

“He’s had this tragic health issue and a debilitating issue,” Miller said, “I told him, I said ‘The thing is, you’ve never been better in my opinion than you are right now. You’re at the top of your game,’ And that is the kind of the amazing part of it, there’s no sadness at the ballpark when you’re around Mike.”

Miller went on to say that Krukow is fun, upbeat, and wants to be nowhere else then at the ballpark, talking about the game of baseball.

Before Krukow became a commentator for the Giants, he ironically grew up in San Gabriel, CA, as a Los Angeles Dodgers fan, and would reguarly attend games as a kid.

In 1973, Krukow began his career as a professional baseball player when he was selected by the Chicago Cubs. In 1983, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants, the team he would call home for the next 43 years.

His career in broadcasting began in 1990, calling games part-time for the Giants. In 1993, he began working full-time in broadcasting and has been doing it for the last 36 years.
