Keeping your lawn and your garden’s flower beds or vegetable patches can be a constant struggle against weeds and invaders – and this includes unwanted moss.
Nuisance moss can spoil your lawn quickly as its spores spread fast – and before you know it, a small patch of the stuff takes over everywhere.
Specially-made moss killer products can contain chemicals, which may harm nature in your garden, or even your pets.
These products can also be pricey, and it’s just another thing to add to your shopping list, but one harmless kitchen item that every household already has is just as effective in the fight against moss.
Now, a gardening expert has revealed that you can ‘eradicate your moss problem with a two-ingredient cocktail’ of water and any washing up liquid – and it’s really easy once you know how.
Gardening business, Joe’s Lawn Care has shared the hack of how to turn your every day washing up liquid into an ‘epic moss killer’.
You can rid the lawn of troublesome moss quickly, by simply mixing up this homemade concoction – and what’s more, it’ll keep it at bay for good.
The expert explained that as summer kicks in – with autumn to follow – this is the time to tackle the moss issue on your lawn.
Moss spreads fast, the organism loves moist shade – and the pesky primitive plant which reproduces easily by omitting spores so late-summertime into the next season is when you’ll see it spread.
If you have an east or north facing garden the moss issue could be more of a problem in your outdoor space due to a lack of sun reaching your patch.
An expert gardener from Joe’s Lawn Care explained that the good news is ‘unlike a lot of lawn diseases, moss doesn’t kill grass’, however it looks unsightly and appears to take over wherever it sets in.
Joe’s Lawn Care described the bad news about moss in your garden: “if you have moss growing on your lawn, you can be 99% sure it’s because of poor conditions, and this needs to be rectified ASAP if you want your lawn to be a) healthy and b) moss-free.”
The expert then shared the options for ridding your lawn of this spongy green nuisance which Joe’s Lawn Care said ‘should definitely be called a weed’.
The expert has said you can get shop-bought moss killer, which will work, but describes this option as ‘not great’, another way is to rake up the spongy stuff, which is effective, but exhausting.
The third option, using washing up liquid is simple, the lawn expert said, detailing how you can ‘eradicate your moss problem with a two-ingredient cocktail of water and dish soap’.
Joe’s Lawn Care shared how you can turn dish soap into an ‘awesome moss killer’ and lays out the steps to follow.
The expert details the method on the Joe’s Lawn Care website: (You start by) mixing 60ml of dish soap into four-and-a-half litres of water and then filling up a hand sprayer is one of the most incredible moss killing recipes you could ever come across.
“Simply take your mixture outside and spray on any patches of moss you come across, holding your bottle just a couple of inches away as you drench the moss with your epic creation.”
And you’ll know it’s worked, the expert revealed, when ‘over the next day or so, you’ll see your moss invasion turn from a lush green colour to an orangey-brown’.
Then it will dry up entirely as Joe’s Lawn Care explained, before it ‘succumbs to the surrounding grass’.
“It’s epic” the lawn pro claimed, to keep it away, all you have to do is repeat this process throughout the seasons, whenever the moss reappears – and you’ll be rid of the green mossy carpet forever more.
