Gems stolen from British Museum put on display for the first time

New pictures have offered a first look at the gems which were stolen from the British Museum.

In August 2023, the museum revealed some 2,000 items of gold jewellery and gemstones dating back to 1,500BC had been pinched..

But now an exhibition called Rediscovering Gems will highlight the recovered pieces and include nine other items that were stolen from the museum.

The gems have never been seen by visitors to the museum.

Along with the stolen goods, 500 items which were not caught up in the crime will also go on display, with the previously stolen items displayed in their own showcase and clearly labelled.

Among the never-before seen items is a yellow-coloured stone with an imprint of the god Jupiter and an oval-shaped blue and green striped stone depicting another god, Bacchus.

A pink and white head of Cupid and a pink-coloured Roman beardless youth are also included.

George Osborne, the chairman of the board of trustees at the British Museum, said it was important that the gems went on show rather than being hidden away.

He said: “We promised we’d show the world the gems that were stolen and recovered rather than hide them away.

“It’s another example of culture change underway at the British Museum as we open up and take ownership of our own story.”

According to the museum, the ancient Mediterranean objects were used as seals, jewellery or collected and sought after by royalty, aristocrats, artists and antiquarians.
